While teaching Physics and Astronomy as an assistant professor in upstate New York, Krishna Kant Shukla decided to quit academics and follow his heart and soul deep into the fathomless waters of Indian Classical Music. Having studied with great maestros like Srimati Laxmi Shankar, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, and Dr. Tapan Bhattacharya, he returned to India in 1994 to explore the roots of Indian Classical Music in the folk traditions. His musical search led him into remote villages in the Himalayan foothills, as well as far flung and difficult to reach dwellings in the central plains. He has been particularly influenced by the songs of Kabir, Gorakhnath, and other poet-saints as sung by his Guru, Pandit Kumar Gandharva.  These songs belong to living spiritual traditions, some of which are over fourteen hundred years old.  More on Krishna at:

The Performance:

Krishna reads out his own english translation before singing each song in the original vernacular. He plays the harmonium, western classical guitar,  as well as other traditional instruments to accompany his voice. He will be joined in this performance by several friends and collaborators as well accompanists on the tabla and tamboura (drone).  He will also lead the audience into chanting some Kirtans from various spiritual traditions.

Special guest, Peter Booth:

We are delighted to announce that the program at Om Sanctuary will also feature poetry-reading by Peter Booth, a world famous Persian scholar, poet, and translator of Hafiz.

Having studied English literature at Bard College, Peter went on to study Persian at Harvard and later at Tehran University. Peter has also lived in Maharashtra, India for almost 35 years, where he helped to build and run Meherabad, an ashram and spiritual community that houses the tomb of Avatar Meher Baba. The Ashram regularly attracts thousands of pilgrims from virtually every country in the world.
