Earth Day Celebration 2018
April 22, 2018: Earth Day
OM Sanctuary had an extremely impactful Earth Day celebration on Sunday, April 22 featuring climate scientist Michael Mann. Many from the local and global community gathered with several qualified professionals to share their knowledge on the science behind climate change. The afternoon also included sustainable practices, current political climate on climate change, and the healthy actions available for the people and the planet.
The featured presenter was climate scientist Michael Mann who authored the book “Return To The Madhouse: Climate Change Denial in the Age of Trump”. During the presentation, the following was reviewed: the scientific evidence of climate change, the reasons we should care, and the often absurd efforts by special interests and partisan political figures to confuse the public, attack the science and scientists, and deny that a problem even exists. It was explained why being cautiously optimistic will help humans to realize that it is possible to prevail in the battle to avert catastrophic and irreversible climate change impacts.
Additionally, an intimate book signing was offered in the River Cane studio. Dr. Harvard Ayers and Dave Harman introduced their co-authored book “Train Wreck Earth”, a scientific novel set in a fictional modern college classroom teaching the settled science of climate change by two professors with the audacity to invite seven leading climate change experts to make guest appearances in this special class. Being that OM Sanctuary has a special emphasis on holistic health, there were many wonderful options for the participants to experience throughout the day. Guests were able to enjoy a chair massage, listen to music by Noah Proudfoot, participate in a raffle of items from many local businesses and experience a Sacred Earth Qi Gong ceremony to close out the event. There was even a forest bathing hike through the Tranquility Trail for those wanting to connect to nature.
The proud event sponsors included OM Sanctuary, The North Carolina Climate Solutions Coalition, WNC Renewables Coalition and AppalaChai. And, a special thank you goes out to the dedicated group of more than a dozen volunteers who made this event possible. This exceptional event was also a successful launch to OM Sanctuary’s newest program addition, Chai Chats. These Saturday afternoon gatherings will continue the community conversations around Health & Wellness and Environmental Sustainability.
